For the second year, Professor Ted T. L. Chen of Tulane University's School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, a renowned program in the field of public health, has opened the international program titled “Practice Strategy in Regional Health” and led students from Tulane University, China Medical University and Asia University on a visit to learn about Chinese medical therapy, and how the modern form of Chinese herbal medicine is manufactured under GMP guidelines in Taichung, Taiwan at May 26 2009.
As alternative medical treatments are getting popular in the West, these students with medical related backgrounds are also interested to know more about Chinese medicines. In addition to China Medical University Hospital, the academic visitors also visited Sun Ten Pharmaceutical Company, the number one Chinese herbal extract manufacturer of Taiwan, the only herbal extract manufacturer to receive GMP certification from Australia TGA.
During the visit at Sun Ten, the students were introduced to the sourcing of raw materials, scientific manufacture of traditional Chinese medicines under GMP guidelines, and quality controls at Sun Ten ensuring products meet international regulations. The students also learned about some safety issues concerning Chinese raw herbs and were shown Sun Ten's persistence in products safety, consistency, and efficiency. In addition to scientific Chinese herbal medicine, Sun Ten has also developed a wide variety of product lines including herbal tonics, teas, and supplements. Many students had never seen such a variety of TCM products and were eager to try several of them. A number of the students from Tulane University also bought several of these products, and said they will share these valuable healthy products with their families. The visitors were impressed by the efforts that Sun Ten put forth in sourcing safe and high quality raw herbs and with the quality control of the finished products.
