The Magical Bullets with Anti-Cancer Effects in TCM

Two commonly used herbs - Licorice (Gan Cao) & Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) are regarded as the "Magical Bullets" with anti-cancer effects in traditional Chinese medicinals.  In the recent research of the Life Science College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the researchers found that a small molecular constituent extracted from Licorice (Gan Cao) can cure prostate gland cancer of mice and that of Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) can cure gastric ulcer of rats.

The mice with prostate gland cancer which did not take the constituent extracted from Licorice (Gan Cao) died within 6-7 weeks. On the other hand, mice with prostate gland cancer which were fed with Licorice (Gan Cao) constituent continued to stay alive for over 12 weeks.  Besides, the tumors on prostate glands shrank and the weights of mice returned to normal.

In another research, the researchers found that the active constituent extracted from Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) can cure mice with gastric ulcer.  In the beginning of the research, the researchers fed rats with medicine of rheumatics, and the rats got gastric ulcer.  Then, the researchers fed the rats with the constituent of Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) for 2-3 days.  They found that the gastric ulcer of rats were cured and the gastric function returned to normal.
